Dresden Files RPG: Leanansidhe
Howdy!

Fred Hicks is getting ready to reveal one of my illustrations for the Dresden Files RPG! Before he does, he's asked me to post some of the sketches. Another quick look into my process. So, I've got the rough sketch, the color study and the pencil art for you. Enjoy!

Dresden Files: Leanansidhe - Sketch
The rough sketch. Pencil with some digital tweaking.

Dresden Files: Leanansidhe - Color Study
The color study. Just a basic sketch of the color themes I'll be using.

Dresden Files: Leanansidhe - Pencils
And the pencils. This piece changed pretty significantly in the colors stage. Final coming soon!

I love the stuff you do with motion. I don't know why more people don't talk about it! Everything points lower right to upper left, then you have this hard, brutal slash upper right to lower left. It makes your eye choke along with Harry.

And of course there's my standard lecherous comment: you totally get the "oh my god she's hot"/"oh my god she's fucking crazy"/"she's going to kill me" vibe that Lea should bring across. The bared leg arched high like that is this whole other focal point, and the hair has a life of its own.

I like when you comment, Rob! I can tell you're really looking at what I've done and taking in all the crazy detail and everything. It makes me happy when people look so closely. Makes the insanity worthwhile!

Thanks for the kind words!

Anytime. I was just telling someone: I only ever took a single art history class, but when I look at your stuff I can feel it all coming back.

maybe i'm missing something that the color will clear up (it is really busy after all), but i don't get how she's sitting on the horse. Cause that looks like her right leg, like she's sitting side saddle. Where's her other leg?

I "think" she is sitting Side Saddle, her other leg obscured by the hounds.

Yeah, the pencils show her left knee most clearly (it's more obscured/absent in the other two).

ho ho! i see it now. You are quite right sir. I imagine that would have been readily apparent in color.

i love the little hidden shit in this, the standing stones, the mushrooms (i love little mushrooms).

Yeah, it may not be perfect, but it's much clearer in the final. The pencils are a bit hard to read without the color and some stuff was redrawn anyways.

Russell and I know you're right. And I am a little sad to admit it!

I am always timing my jobs with a little timer program and the prices are going to have to more accurately match my hours soon now that I have more data on how long everything's taking me these days. (The answer! Too long!)

Also, I wanted to add:

Pretty soon, I'm going to set up a second e-mail address for job inquries and Russell has agreed to manage them. So I'm going to have assistance with answering commission e-mails. Which is one of my biggest problems right now. Keeping on top of all of that.

At some point in the future, I have a dream to mash together a whole bunch of the visual artists and writers in our tribe a create at least one fantastic (and successful) illustrated anthology project. You are definitely on the list, madame. High up.

...Oh, and the Lea picture isn't bad, either. ;)

So about how many illustrations are you doing for the initial DFRPG project?
I'm really looking forward to that coming out.

I don't think Fred would mind me telling you I'm doing about 10 of these jobbies! All full-page full-color plates. It's a pretty intense project and it's going to be oh so nice.

Oh noes! Fred! He wants to know when it's going to be published!!!! I believe the official answer is something like "We're not sure and you can't make us guess." But I could be wrong! :) It's a pretty big project for everyone involved.
